Biorationals and Crop Quality

In agricultural production systems, biorationals promote crop quality. Depending on the use, their effects may be seen as an increased yield, higher packout, greater percentage of higher grade fruits or vegetables at harvest, or extended shelflife.

Biorationals help growers deliver desirable crop attributes (value) downstream, directly impacting their return on investment. Biorationals offer growers a variety of quality-related benefits, positively impacting productivity and profitability in several ways:

  • Biorationals protect crops from injury
  • Biorationals promote physiological characteristics that enhance marketability
  • Biorationals help manage resistance to other important crop protection tools
  • Biorationals help growers manage harvest intervals
  • Biorationals help growers manage pesticide residue levels.

In high value crop production, biorationals such as DiPel® and XenTari® microbial insecticides help keep produce items blemish and injury-free – defects that would otherwise reduce marketability or result in postharvest spoilage and decay. In row crops as well as in high value crops, biorationals are used in integrated pest management programs to slow the onset of resistance to important conventional chemistries while at the same time maintaining beneficial insect populations and minimizing environmental impact. Since they are typically exempt from residue tolerance, biorationals are also used as key components in residue management programs.

VBC’s broad portfolio of Plant Growth Regulators includes ProGibb®, ReTain®, ProTone®, and many other biorationals that enhance physiological aspects of a crop that positively impact yield or farm gate value: shape, size and number of fruit, enhanced crop color and texture, and improved postharvest quality and storage characteristics. All of these benefits deliver value to food buyers and sellers alike.

VBC develops biorationals that deliver value up and down the food value chain, from the growers who produce crops to the processors, brokers, retailers, and even food service companies who sell finished goods, all the way to the consumer. The quality and consistent performance of our biorationals instills buyer confidence and drives future business.
