Psorophora

Mosquitoes in the Psorophora genus (floodwater mosquitoes) are found in the tropics and warmer temperate regions of North and South America. Several species of Psorophora are vectors of arboviruses:

• Ilheus virus is transmitted by Psorophora ferox
• Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus is transmitted by Psorophora ferox and Psorophora confinnis
  Female Psorophora lay their eggs on damp or dry mud and debris in fields and wooded plains. The eggs can withstand months or years of desiccation and hatch when the habitat is inundated by rain or floodwaters.
